14 May 2010 - We are having a time trying to cope with the new ARRL web site, but it seems they now have it pretty well worked out. I hope each and every one goes to the new site and lets us know what you thank. I apologize for the inconvenience it has caused, maybe we can chalk it up to progress!!

Jean KE4OEQ ASM, myself W4BDB SM TN and Lowell Bennington WD4DJW SEC were able to attend hamfests in Union City and Bartlett.  We had a great time at each and got to see and talk with all our friends and meet several new ones. I am looking forward to our next one at Knoxville June 12.  It will be the state convention and we will have a special guest, Bob Allison, WB1GCM, Test Engineer from the ARRL HQ. We hope every one will stop by and meet Bob and make him feel welcome. Bob will also give a presentation during the Forum. Also in attendance will be Mickey Cox K5MC Delta Division Director along with David Norris K5UZ Vice Director and of course myself W4BDB SM TN and Jean KE4OEQ ASM.

I hope each and every one avails themselves to your local clubs and hamfest. Lets get the ham spirit going. Field Day is coming up June 26-27.  Join in and make this the biggest yet.

We have had major flooding in the Nashville and West TN areas. I wish to thank all the Amateur Radio operators who participated in the communication efforts in those areas. There were many hams assisting in these efforts along with the repeater owners who linked their repeaters so there was a good link across the state. It these times when everyone steps up and shows Ham Radio at its best.

30 Jun 2009 - ARRL Receives MARS Call Sign

The ARRL now has a new Emergency Communications tool in its toolbox -- MARS call sign AAN1ARL. According to W1AW Station Manager Joe Carcia, NJ1Q, "The call sign was requested to reflect both the holder of the license (ARRL) and the various MARS services (Army, Air Force and Navy)." The MARS station will be housed at W1AW, the Hiram Percy Maxim Memorial Station. ARRL Emergency Preparedness and Response Manager Dennis Dura, K2DCD, said, "The establishment of an ARMY MARS call sign for W1AW begins a relationship with the Military Affiliate Radio System and the ARRL. Our two organizations are working toward the near-term establishment of a Memorandum of Understanding. Additionally, the League and MARS will utilize each other's personnel and technical capabilities to further enhance our emergency preparedness and response capabilities." The MARS program consists of licensed Amateur Radio operators who are interested in military communications on a local, national and international basis as an adjunct to normal communications. MARS has a long and proud history of providing worldwide auxiliary emergency communications during times of need. The combined three service MARS programs (Army, Air Force, and Navy-Marine Corps) volunteer force of more than 5000 dedicated and skilled Amateur Radio operators is the backbone of the MARS program. There are Army MARS stations in Japan, Korea, Hawaii, Panama, the Virgin Islands, Puerto Rico, Alaska, Central America, Africa, Germany and the continental United States. MARS responders operate on specially assigned military radio frequencies in voice, teletype and packet modes of communications.

14 Jan 2009 - Greetings to all Amateur Radio operators. Welcome to a new year. I hope each and every one has a chance to support their local and national Amateur radio programs. I urge all Hams to join and support ARRL and get active in their programs.

ASM Jean KE4OEQ, SEC Lowell Bennington WD4DJW and myself kicked off the new year with a Hamfest in Morristown. We had a great time and met many new and old friends. We would like to thank June McClary AI4SO and Henry McClary AG4QG for their invitation and hospitably we had a good trip and great Fest. Congratulations on another successful gathering. My thanks also to Joe Warshawsky, KA5NXV for his help and sending the photos for our web page this month.

Miss Emily Bishop WE4MB our YADD was there and gave another youth presentation and presented some prizes to those attending.  Good job Emily.

Tennessee had an increase in new ARRL members this past year; let's try to do even better this year. We also appreciate all your efforts with emergency communications. Remember training, having your equipment and yourself in shape to go if called upon is a top priority. Disaster strikes when least expected. So be prepared. I want to thank all our SEC, DEC and EC for their help in this years West Tennessee Earth Quake Drill. We had a great response but can still do with some improvement with communications with our SEC, DEC and EC. It is important that we have good phone numbers and email address, these are essential when propagation fails.

Let's support your State and local Nets. Your NC stations do a great job and need your support. There is traffic still being passed and I would like to se more, it's the practice that keeps us proficient.

KEEP UP YOUR GOOD WORK TENNESSEE

Jean (KE4OEQ) and I managed to get to the GLADEVILLE Hamfest and it was great, we enjoyed the fellowship and meeting several old and new friends. I want to thank Roger and their club for the invitation and courtesy they showed us. We managed to work the ARRL table and sign up some new members. They had lots of good door prizes and main a prize, course you had to be there. I look forward to next years event. I have also been able to get back on a few 3980 nets, even took some traffic this morning and believe me it felt great.

Enough about me, I want to thank all the Hams in Tennessee that helped with the Hurricane traffic this month. The West Tennessee ARES groups and the MARS group that stood ready when and if called upon. It's Amateurs like you that make Ham radio a pleasure. Keep up the GOOD WORK.

I also want to again thank the net controls on 3980 who give their time and energy to making it happen. All the NTS Hams that handle the traffic and keep us informed. I look forward to seeing our traffic handling pick up with routine, priority and formal traffic. This is what keeps us proficient in being able to work the emergencies when they happen.

Again I thank God for allowing me the privilege to be here.

Keep up your outstanding work. Thanks.

24 Jun 2008 - The Tennessee Balloon Group announces its fifth flight, TABEL-5. (Tennessee Area Balloon Experimental Launch #5)

Date/Time:                  June 28, 2008 10AM Central Time
Mission Location:        Wilson County Fairgrounds, Lebanon, TN.
Callsigns/Freq/Modes: 144.39MHz APRS NT4BG-12
Webpages:                  http://groups.yahoo.com/group/tnballoon/
                                   http://www.groovin.net/ke4pjw/balloon
                                   http://nt4bg.net
Additional Information:  1500g Balloon

This flight is in cooperation with the Wilson County Amateur Radio Club and their Field Day 2008 operations. We will be flying a cross-band repeater as the main payload. VHF up and UHF down.

Uplink is 146.55 MHz with a CTCSS of 192.8.   /  Downlink is 445.850 MHz.

If all goes well, it may end up being full duplex, in which case a 2m user could stay on 2m as long as the other user stays on UHF.  At the least it will be half duplex as described above, and all users will need to be able to Tx on 2m & Rx on UHF.

We are planning to fly the main APRS tracker as a separate payload. This package consists of a Garmin GPS18 GPS Receiver (proven high altitude model), an OpenTracker (OT1x), and a Maxon DM-0515 VHF data radio (~5W) 144.39MHz APRS NT4BG-12.

The APRS tracker will be using Lithium AA cells and the repeater will use Lithium-Ion rechargeable packs for power.

We will also use a 50mW 2m (146.565MHz) FM/morse code ID Beacon.  We will use a 1500g Balloon and a sub one pound, 60 inch parachute.  The current plan is to use Hydrogen as the lifting gas.  Total payload weight should be about 6 lbs.  We hope to reach over 100K feet. There is no cut down mechanism.

21 Jun 2008 - The weekend of June 28-29 is Amateur Radio's premier on air and on location demonstration and fun event, Field Day. Turn Knobs Get on the Air and Help in Disasters has once again assembled a list of Field Day locations in Tennessee and surrounding areas at sunyside.org (also links below). This is basically a 24 event.

There may also be additional times for setup and tear down. All are encouraged to visit the set up of local clubs. You will probably get a chance to go on the air with the guidance of a licensed operator, even if you are not licensed now. If you would like more information, such as how you could operate this year or have a location to submit, please contact n1wi # hotmail.com.

Please submit name of organization (url if you have one)-location with address or nearest cross streets-unique and interesting information-special instructions if needed-class, call, talk in etc -- contact information (a name, an e-mail and a phone that can be reachable during the event). Please submit this directly to n1wi # hotmail.com. You need not be an actual club to submit but the location must be open to the public.

The Rules and regulations for Field Day are found at http://www.arrl.org/contests/announcements/fd/. Please take some time to make sure all your clubs information is up to date and accurate on anywhere it is mention on the ARRl website.

Please take the time and invite a few technical oriented friends to see a great hobby and a great way to put technical skills to use during a disaster. Invite that texter out to hear some cw and that neighbor. We will invite them to experience the thrill of riding the air waves.

This is a list of mirrored sites in case the main site gets overloaded.  It also gives the link to the printable all text list.

23 Apr 2008 - L.B. Cebik, W4RNL (SK) - L.B. Cebik, age 68, of Powell, TN passed away suddenly 23 April 2008.  Preceded in death by his wife, Jean and parents, James and Ella Cebik. Survived by brothers and sisters in law, Jim and Nancy, Ron and Ruth Cebik of Connecticut; sisters in law, Betsy Andes of Michigan, Joan Robeson of Knoxville and Teresa Brooks of Cookeville.

He was a life member of ARRL and a technical editor for antennaX Magazine. The Amateur Radio community knew him as “The Antenna Guru.” He was probably the most widely published and often read author of Amateur Radio antenna articles ever to write on the subject. It has been said of him that he communicated with a gentle scholarly attitude and a real eye for detail in assisting others with their antenna matters. He will be sadly missed by all. [ more ... ]

03 Apr 2008 - Welcome to Tennessee Section, it seems like it was last week when I last wrote the section news, guess staying busy makes the time fly.

We were in Tullahoma for the Ham Fest and had a great time, even though the weather was not too good we still had a great fest and met a lot of old friends and got to meet some new ones. I want to thank ED Hohenthaner W7LGD, for all his help in setting up events and forums, job well-done Ed.

We are heading to Bartlett Free Fest April 12. I am looking forward to meeting each and every one there. We will have an ARRL & ARES Forum. Henry Leggette, WD4Q Delta Division Director will be speaking, also Karl Bullock, WA5TMC Vice Director & Amy Bullock, N5TBB Legislative Action Chairman Delta Division will be speaking, so plan to attend and here what's up in Tennessee Delta Division.

We still need some staff appointments, Public Information Coordinator for the state and Public Information officers for the districts. If you are interested please contact your local officers EC'S, DEC, or SM. You may visit the ARRL web site and fill out an application on line. We need your help in getting accurate, fast emergency information as it happens across the state into the SM so it might be reported to the ARRL HQ. This gives them a chance to post ham activities during emergency and see that the Amateur get the publicity they deserve.

We have been ask by the ANG to help as backup communications for a EARTHQUAKE EXERCISE in West TN, Memphis area. This Exercise will involve several states as well as US Government, State and local agency assisting in the DRILL. The need for backup communication will be on APRIL 18-19. It will be around the clock operation. The communication CP will be located at Millington and be staffed by ANG personnel along with an Amateur Radio Operator. Full details as how we will assist and receive traffic are not complete at the time of this writing so I urge ALL AMATEUR RADIO OPERATORS to monitor HF frequency 3980 during this EXERCISE and help with any traffic that might be handed down. Lets show our capability to help and support when we are needed. .

We still do have some problems in our ARES EC / DEC reporting site. We need all Tennessee EC / DEC to go to the following web site and follow the sign up instructions, for your password. http://tnares.com

There are some other old sites with this same look but will not work, please use this address, http://tnares.com

All DEC/EC should use this site for entering your ARES personnel and reports. If you have any problems please be sure to email a copy of your monthly reports to the SEC Lowell Bennington WD4DJW at wd4djw # arrl.net  He will assist in getting you set up.  DO NOT send monthly EC/DEC reports to Jimmy Floyd NQ4U.  Jimmy is now the Technical Coordinator for Tennessee. Jimmy is working to get digital working across the state.

This web site is a very important and easy to use once you become familiar with the site.

06 Feb 2008 - Greetings to all our Tennessee Hams. January went by quickly with several activities including Morristown Hamfest and the ARRL VHF/UHF contest. My thanks for the invitation to the Morristown Fest and also to the OARS club in Cleveland, TN, for letting us participate in the VHF/UHF contest they ran on Sassafras Knob on Little Frog Mountain. They braved the single digit temps with light snow; I really enjoyed being back on the mountain where we used to run contests in the 1960’s. Keep up the cool work, fellows.

If you have been on our web sites, you will see some major changes taking place. Although they are still in the works, our state BM and web master, Greg Tomerlin K4KO has done a fantastic job making the change over from one server to another as well as upgrading the looks of each of the cabinet member’s pages. I urge all to check out the following sites:

www.arrl.org/sections/?sect=TN

www.tnarrl.org

The next site is for all Tennessee ASEC, DEC and EC. This site is for monthly reporting. We urge all EC to go to this site and register for your password and start placing your ARES members and reports so the SEC can get a total update on all the ARES members and their qualifications. You will be hearing more about this site from the State SEC, Lowell Bennington WD4DJW.

I am still making appointments and really appreciate all who have come forward and asked to serve; they are off to a great start and doing an excellent job.

If I might be of service to any one please give me a call or email. I try to respond to all email which now is running from 75-100 per day. Oh, well it will slow down!
